Vivienne had a fear of the Whomping Willow, and couldn't believe that the boy, now known as Declan, would be so brave as to associate with it so directly. She wouldn't dare point her wand at the tree, or walk near it.
The mouse was still in the air, and she was curious as to what he was thinking about doing. "I really hope that you're not planning on putting the mouse back there." But she had a feeling he was, and there wasn't much she could do to stop him.

'Why not?' Declan asked casually, doing exactly what she'd been hoping that he wasn't going to do. It was all part of the lesson, and if the mouse got killed in the process then that was just life. Normally things didn't come to that though and he figured that regardless of how the mouse reacted it probably wouldn't die, at least not today, anyway. Besides, knowing the way things worked it would probably be something completely stupid and unforeseen that the little creature would die of, like getting eaten by a bird, rather than something it knew about and had obviously encountered before.
