Jess loved hanging out with Nathan. He was her very best friend. When they were together guaranteed they would be in fits of laughter by the end of the day, tears streaming down their faces.

Time with Jess... Nathan would clear his schedule for a month for time with her. Hanging out in the courtyard... It was her idea, she invited him, was it a date if she was the one that asked him to come out? Damn! If he knew that should would want to hang out with him like this he would have asked her... No, he probably wouldn't have.
"Ahh this is going to be awesome today." He said shooting her a smile. The day was almost over though, late after noon was setting on the chilly grounds. "I mean afternoon... uhh" He said awkwardly. Smooth. Starting some alone time with Jess awkwardly... That was a good move.

Jess giggled at Nathan, he was so funny sometimes the way he pretended to stumble over words.
"So?" she asked, finding a place to sit. "What has the first week of school brought you so far?" Jess asked, a huge grin on her face as she settled into some soft grass. "Any girls ask you out yet?" She asked with an innocent smile playing on her lips.
She really wanted Nathan to feel as though he could tell her everything. She knew that Nathan was the one person who she told everything to, and hell if a guy did ask her out, or she got a crush on someone he would be the first to know.

Was that an invitation? She asked him to the courtyard, where as far as he knows they are going to be here alone together... Watching the sunset, over the beautiful gardens... Thats a date right? Then the first thing she asks him is if anyone has asked him out... Beside how his first week of school has been.... Actually it's probably nothing.
"FIrst week was... Well..." He said trying to find the word to sum it up. "Average. Nothing spectacular has happened around here..." He said, watching her hair lift and fall in the chilly breeze. "I huh mean beside this. Hanging out with you." He added trying to shoot her a winning grin, but probably ending up with a cheesy smile.
"What about you... Any boys ask you out?" He asked, the words were acompanied by a nervous swoop in his stomach.

"No!" Jess laughed as Nathan turned her question around on her. "I'm pretty sure I'm low on the most eligible batchelorette list." She said in a low voice, as though this was some kind of secret, which it definately wasn't. "Besides, if I do find someone you'll be the first to know." She assured him. "What else are friends for?" She prompted, relaxing back with a smile on her lips.

"Yeah... Thats what friends are for" Nathan sighed, trying with all of his will not to let his shoulders slump. 'Don't think of yourself in such a negative way Jess, you're beautiful' he thought 'You are number one on some lists... on my list...' If only he had the God damn guts to say it to her. "Maybe you should't worry about dating..." Nathan said, trying to word his next sentence just right. "I mean maybe it too much hassle... To much of a distraction from school and stuff ya' know?" He said. He didn't want to sound like the friend that was trying to knock all other guys out of the competition in some sort of 'If I can't have her no one can' sort of way.... And he figured that appealing to her Ravenclaw side with study would help convince her. "All I hear is drama drama drama from couple ya' know." He said.
Subconsciously he added a 'Or you should only date someone that you know really well.... Say a friend' But the thought died in his mind as quickly as it came because he would never have the guts to say something so bold... And to Jess of all people.

"Hmmm" Jess mused, thinking about what Nathan said. Corey had had lots of girlfriends. All of them fizzled out quickly, there was a certain.... gruffness to Corey that took some people a lot of getting used to. Jess knows it took her a while to get along with him. She only did it because Nathan was such good friends with him.
"I suppose you're right." She agreed. "Boys, huh?" She asked, trying to light the mood but only managing to look completely awkward.

Nathan laughed awkwardly at what he could only assume was a joke, while wondering if he had taken a step backward or not. Swearing off boys or dating someone else? Which was worse? Well as far as Nathan knew he would probably still feel this miserable if she was dating someone else so maybe they were even. He decided not to push the topic any further, now was his chance to create more moments with her, not pine over the ones that are never going to happen.
"How are you going in charms?" He asked, he knew that this was his strong suit (after a bit of practice of course) maybe if she wasn't doing so well (even though she is brilliant in every way) he could line up some sort of study sesh. They hung out a lot but Nathan always thought that they should hang out more... This was almost like his golden ticket.

"I'm doing ok." Jess said. She didn't mind charms, being a Ravenclaw she found most of her classes easy to follow, given she does her homework.
"Potions though" she said in a low voice and a raised eyebrow. "I aint doing to well there, if you know what I mean." She added, with a slight head wobble. Jess frowned internally, it was a bit of a worry actually, how badly she was doing at potions. "Do you think you could help me?" She asked Nathan, he was actually quite clever, for a Hufflepuff anyway. Most of the time Jess thought that if he wasn't such a great friend he would be in Ravenclaw.

Ohhh bloody typical! Of course the only subject she struggles with is the one that he's worst at. He honestly couldn't see why potions was even a class here. A muggle could do it if they wanted, if they had the right ingredient and it really isn't that hard to get some of them.
Though Jess was asking for his help... She probably didn't know that he was complete rubbish at potions. He could tutor her, he would only really need to stay one lesson ahead of her right? How hard could it be?
"Potions. Yeah potions is alright." He said trying to sound casual. "I could help you out, you know if you needed it." He added, he didn't want to say that he was good at it, that might have been overselling his ability. He just hoped that his plan wouldn't blow up in his face... literally.

Jess' head snapped up, her eyes focussing on Nathan's.
"Ohh great!" She almost shouted in a happy and excited voice. "I was really worried there, I think I was failing." She said with a raised eyebrow. As much as Jess wasn't the most typical girl she was a typical Ravenclaw and her failing potions has really started to weigh on her. "That is such a relief." she said, placing a hand over her heart and looking at Nathan with sparkling eyes.
"I love that I can count on you." Jess said easily, genuinely happy that she could call Nathan her very best friend.

I love everything about you! Nathans mind screamed back, though on the outside he just shot her back a smile. Cool we can jam out some study... I'm free most of the time... Uhhh not that I don't have things on you know, I do... A lot." He started to stammer. "I mean I do have time but I also have things.. When will be a good time for you?" He asked. Well he completely stuffed that up didn't he?

"Ohh great." Jess said, now eager to start, "Maybe we could meet in the study room on Wednesday and Friday nights." She suggested. She smiled broadly at Nathan, happy to have a friend like him.
"Thank you." She said seriously with a soft smile, she placed a hand on hers. "I really appreciate you Nathan." she said softly.

Nathan really didn't know how he was supposed to feel. Excited? Nervous? Hopeless? She reached out and touched his hand... She appreciated him? What the hell was going on. Nathan wondered if there was ever any other guy that was in this position, because right now he was feeling for him.
"Uhm, how is the Uke going?" He asked, hoping that she was able to understand the short term for the instrument he gave her last year. He wondered if she ever thought of him while she played, that was the reason he bought it after all.

"Oh yeah, great!" Jess said enthusiastically. I think I'm starting to get really good at it. Actually, I wrote you a song, you should hear it!" She said happily, thinking about the song she recently finished, finally finding the perfect chord progression.
"I actually had some help writing it from a new friend" Jess explained. "He's really good at the guitar." She added with a smile. "And nice." she added as an after thought.
